Happy Fourth of July from the Coalition for Carolina.
As the United States celebrates 250 years of independence, we want to recognize the revolutionary idea that was the nation’s first public university – the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
The vision for UNC was foundational to our budding democracy. North Carolina’s constitution of 1776 laid the framework for public education and a public university “paid by the public, as may enable them to instruct at low prices; and all useful learning shall be duly encouraged, and promoted.”
UNC-Chapel Hill was officially chartered by the North Carolina General Assembly in 1789 and opened its doors is 1795.
UNC Communications & Marketing recently highlighted the historical significance of Carolina’s founding, noting that “Carolina’s history parallels that of the United States, and the University is a leading example of the good public institutions can produce.”
In the piece, UNC archivist Nicholas Graham added, “You could study the history of UNC, and it’s like studying American history in a microcosm.”
For the history buffs, Carolina has a full “America 250 at Carolina” digital exhibition, including highlights of a Wilson Library exhibition (on display through Dec. 4) that explores Carolina’s role in the Revolutionary War.
From the Army to athletics to aerospace, Carolina alums have made their mark on the American story for the past 250 years. At the Coalition for Carolina, we see our role as advocating for the university we love to be sure it continues to make its mark for the next 250.
