Thank you to everyone who signed our petition last week October312024!!
If you haven’t already, please sign the petition today. Please also spread the word by sharing with your friends and family who love Carolina and believe in defending the integrity of higher education.
With the Trump administration’s deadline for feedback on the compact lapsing on Monday, we’re encouraged by the pushback from seven of the nine universities receiving invitations, including MIT, Brown, the University of Southern California, Penn, UVA, Dartmouth and the University of Arizona. While Vanderbilt did not outright reject the compact, it declined to sign and expressed concerns. The final university, University of Texas at Austin, did not officially sign but expressed interest.
As we wait to see what invitations and edicts come next from Washington, there are already reports that the compact has been extended to every university in the country. It is vital that UNC-Chapel Hill and the UNC System reject the compact to protect Carolina’s independence and integrity as an institution.

As we noted last week, the compact includes several provisions that run counter to the interests or current operational realities of UNC, including its standards for freezing tuition and its undermining of merit-based determinations for scientific funding.
The terms of this compact conflict with Carolina’s interests and compromise our institutional integrity, and we cannot stand for it.
Sign our petition calling on the UNC Board of Governors, the UNC-Chapel Hill Board of Trustees, President Peter Hans, Chancellor Lee Roberts and members of the North Carolina General Assembly to reject this compact on behalf of UNC-Chapel Hill and the UNC System.

Please also forward the petition to friends and family and share with your networks on social media. It is important we make alumni and friends of Carolina aware of what is at stake. We cannot stay silent when so much is on the line.
Thank you for making your voice heard and encouraging others to join the fight to protect UNC from harmful government overreach.
Finally, if you are looking for another way to get involved, the organization Indivisible is organizing a rally this Friday, Oct. 24 from 2-4pm at the Plaza at 140 West Franklin Street. While not an official Coalition for Carolina event, the rally is billed as “Right to Light: A Rally in Support of Higher Education” and should be another good opportunity to make your voice heard. You can learn more and RSVP to the Indivisible event here.
